When you work in our industry, getting through PPE is part of the job.
Boots, winter coats, high-vis jackets; they take a battering, and when new kit gets issued, the old stuff has a habit of ending up in a pile at the back of the locker room, destined for the skip.
But not anymore!
This month, the team at Kingsbury Pallets Rotom UK decided enough was enough. After a thorough clear-out of the locker room, they gathered up every item still in decent condition; boots with miles left in them, coats that still had plenty of warmth to give, and bagged them up, and dropped them off at the Salvation Army donation point at their local Morrisons store.
It’s a small act, but the impact is real. Items that would have ended up in landfill are now on their way to people who genuinely need them, and for a team that works outdoors in all weathers, they know better than most just how much a decent pair of boots or a warm coat can mean.
But this is just the beginning.
Going forward, Kingsbury Pallets is making it official. A dedicated charity donation box is being installed in the locker room, clearly labelled and permanently in place, so that whenever a team member gets new kit, the old stuff has somewhere to go other than the bin (or the back of the locker!). Regular collections will then be made to local donation points, turning a one-off clear-out into an ongoing commitment.
Steve Cuddeford, Managing Director at Rotom UK, said:
“We are so focused on sustainability in all our processes at Kingsbury, the missing piece really was how to upcycle our PPE (which is essential for our team’s health and safety). A big thank you to our Health & Safety Officer, Louise Harris, for organising this whole initiative. It has been uplifting for all of us, and all of the team has got involved.”
Our new scheme is proof that doing good and making a difference doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it just takes a box, a label, and a team that cares.
